Preface: To write about such a subject one must be extremely prayerful. Likewise to use the Word of God in order to formulate your opinion places one out on a limb with God. Even though I am like a kid anxious to open his Christmas gift early, God places His veil where He deems necessary. It is not my intent to cross over God’s boundary lines. I merely seek to imagine what it might be like in our Father’s abode. These are the inner walls of my imagination seeking to scratch my curiosity.
“Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”— Revelation 12:7–10 (NIV)
Have you ever wondered what it might be like behind the veil into the heavenly realm? Wouldn’t you like to take a peek behind the curtains into the heavenly abode? Though we have heard about heaven, other than the stories written in our sacred scriptures such as the scary ones in the Book of Revelation, our minds cannot imagine such an existence. Heaven houses living spirit beings without physical bodies or boundaries. With no walls there would be nothing there to restrain them. Spirits are pure unburdened consciousness far superior to anything imaginable to us. We are talking about entities that don’t require eyes to see, ears to hear or a body to move. Time does not exist for them, not as we know it to operate in this realm. Before the universe was formed God existed in His eternal kingdom. He populated it with His heavenly beings that were eternal like Him. This was before He created time and spiraled the universe into existence. I AM was, HEAVEN was… and there WAS the ABODE of GOD in full glory. Out is the ONE came the ALL.
Before all things were formed there was God. Can you imagine… before God made living creatures He created a place where they could exist? He set the parameters of existence and spread it out like a blanket over eternity. He also gave living beings the tools of which they could use to maintain life and being in a bubble of time. What we see before us now was created only for specific reasons and purposes. Even though this realm appears to be the only reality, beyond this exists the unimaginable.
Heaven is a place where there is no more sickness, and no more death. Everything in God’s abode would be perfect and incorruptible. Heavenly creatures, unlike us, were created to serve specific divine purposes. Why would God give mankind so much leverage with choice and free will while eternal beings were given specific purposes as they were created? Perhaps in essence we are also spirit beings going through a phase of mortality. This shell we’re in has to shed corruptibility in order to become incorruptible. That is like placing a dry seed in the ground so it can sprout new life. We are likewise spirit beings on the way to our eternal existence in the heavenly abode. We must find our way back from whence we came. Thankfully our Creator is watching over our eternal journey and has seen the paths we take. What will be has already been done in the eyes of God. At the appointed time, which not even the angels in heaven knows, God will draw back the curtains of creation and usher in the New Kingdom; a New Heaven and a New Earth where He will be with us eternally.
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” -Revelation 21:1-4
Although I can read these words… my mind will only allow me to imagine a foggy and vague notion of what they are actually revealing.
As it is written, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard and no one’s heart has imagined all the things that God has prepared for those who love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9
Apparently Paul, the author of this scripture was given a peek beyond the veil for a brief moment in order that he might preform the duties that were set out for him, which was to share the gospel of Christ with mankind. In 2 Corinthians 12: 2-4, this is what he wrote:
“I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that such a person—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows—was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat."
As you might notice… even Paul admitted that he was not even certain that God had actually given him a peek into Paradise seeing things that no mortal being was permitted to repeat. He was speechless! The Spirit of Christ Himself had previously converted Paul into a believer when He assigned him the mission of spreading His gospel. Paul was certain about his calling, but of the visit up into the third heaven Paul was uncertain. A peak beyond such curtains is unspeakable and by all means unimaginable. Our minds were not built to register such things, not from this side of existence.
According to Christ Himself, this temporary existence is not our true essence. It is but a step along the way of our eternal existence. As He was praying for His disciples Christ asked this of the Father.
“I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.” -John 17:14-16-
Many do not heed His words because they cannot imagine what He was speaking about. They can’t imagine living in an existence beyond this one. They wondered how could a mere man enter the world and knowingly return back from whence He came? They could not imagine the abode of God. Christ was praying this for the disciples that He chose to walk with Him during His earthly journey. If they had a problem believing and were right there, walking and witnessing Christ in action, how much harder would it be for us who must believe without seeing? Jesus actually said these words to doubting Thomas. Thomas was one of His disciples who refused to believe in Him until He appeared to him after death.
“Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29
Christ had already told them in John 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Somehow none of this registered in their minds until after they witnessed His death and resurrection. According to John Christ spent forty days with His disciples after being resurrected teaching them the gospel that they must spread; which was the good news about salvation. We are ultimately left with the choice of believing in the gospel…or not.
The veil that separates mortality from immortality is not a curtain that mortals are allowed to cross over to and from. However it is mentioned that spiritual beings do cross over such veils, namely spirits who have been given permission to do so as part of God’s ultimate plan. One such scene was written in the book of Job, which is assumed to be the oldest of all the books written in the bible.
“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” Job 1:6-7
The notion of such a place as heaven has been in the consciousness of man for eons of time. Long before Moses pinned the Old Testament or even before the establishment of God’s chosen people someone wrote the book of Job speaking clearly about the heavenly abode. Where did this knowledge come from? Well… God has not been silent. Through the many prophets He spoke and made known what He required of mankind.
We seem to think that God created mankind and essentially hid Himself from us. That is far, far from the truth. God has actually communicated with mortal man since the very beginning. He walked in the garden with the first man. He selected a people of whom to set the slate. He rose up many prophets and imparted His wisdom with the wise. He sent His Son, who was with Him from the start to let us know what and how to complete our divine missions. Far be it from God that He would leave us alone. Right now in this very moment God is present even as you are reading this essay. As you invoke His name He appears, to those who faithfully seek Him.
Yes, I might be that restless kid that wants to open his present early, but God delights in our curiosity, especially when done in reverence and respect. He says to us in an open invitation:
“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
I know that I have prayed and that I also seek His face, but I am not certain that I have humbled myself to the degree that God deems sufficient. However I do know that God is far superior than I so when I reach out to Him from my lowly position He is capable of reaching down to me and lifting me up to His face if my heart is in the right place. I yield to God Almighty. In due time we will all be there with the Father, if we live right, Selah!
