The Preeminence of Christ

As a Christian writer it is important for me to make my affiliation known to those whom might read some of my writings. I know that I do not write for everyone alike. Some do not follow or believe in Christ, our Lord and Savior. So in essence this essay is for those who believe. Many times we try to straddle the fence to remain friends with everyone but if being friends with the world means denying Christ I am already doomed. I choose against the world and for Christ because I know Who He IS. If I could say something to convince the world to allow Christ to reveal Himself to them then, so be it. If not, then so be it! Everyone will be given a chance to know their Maker and it is up to them to make their selection either for or against.

For my brothers and sisters of the faith, this is what we believe about Jesus Christ, our Lord:

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions o r principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.  And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.” Colossians 1:15-18 This was in a letter from Paul to the faithful in Colossae.

As a person raised to believe in the gospel I fought against knowledge because I was not ready to open my heart to God. Fortunately my guardians planted a seed in me that eventually sprouted. It was because of the love of others that the seed was planted but even further it was because of God’s foreknowledge that my loved ones planted the seed.

As blinded as I was blocking the love of Christ from my heart, am I now enthused to express my love and fellowship with Him. A good friend of mine says it this way; “if they knew better they would do better.” You can take that statement a number of ways but once the Spirit comes to you He imparts His wisdom and knowledge. If you belong to Him you will receive because it will be like sweet nectar to a honeybee. As Christ said, “My Sheep hear My voice and I know them, and they follow me.” They were known from before birth, because of God’s omnipotent powers. Not all will respond to His call, but some will, sooner or later. That is up to Almighty God.

According to this passage in Colossians Christ is the image of the invisible God that we know as our Heavenly Father. It was through Him that all things were created in heaven and on the earth. He was before all things and in Him all things consist. If you take a moment to meditate upon just those few passages you will know the Lord. If those words ring true to you, you will know the sound of His voice and when He beckons you to follow Him. But as was I, many are not ready to receive Him… so for whatever reasons… they reject this truth. Obviously God is patient beyond what we know as limits, but there is a limit, therefore one should seek the Lord while He can be found. None of us know what tomorrow holds so why not now?

As I look back I think my defiance was because of my ignorance but it also could have been because of the forces from the dark spiritual realm that constantly wars against God’s children. They are quite clever in their attacks and trickery is one of their main tactics. Just as with Adam and Eve, they convince us mortals that we really don’t have to do what God says because we can be like God and do the things we want to do. That is not true, we are only to do or not do what God says and that is final. Don’t fall for the oldest trick known to man that the enemy plays upon us. Since that one trick works so well he constantly uses it through the centuries. However, “My sheep hear my voice and I know them, says Christ. Yes He knows His sheep but do the sheep want to follow Him?

Another passage that hit me in the same way was the beginning passages to the gospel of John, who was with Christ when He was here upon the earth:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1:1-5

This is very similar to what Paul wrote and maybe Paul got this from John, but it is the same spirit that made this truth known to both writers. Christ was the Word and was with God in the beginning before the world was formed. It was through Him all things were made and in Him was the life and light of men. For without Him nothing that was made… could have been made. It was God’s plan from the very beginning that the Word was send down to live amongst us and make the Father’s truth known to mankind.

Now both of these passages hit me like a bolt of lightening and suddenly whatever that was blocking my ability to receive Christ was lifted. I could hear the voice of my Shepherd and now know that He has been waiting on me to make my declaration, either for or against Him and I choose for.

My words are worthless because like you, I too am a sinner, not worthy of anything godly but my new desire is to please God and to get to know Him better day by day. I have chosen Christ as my Lord and Savior, knowing full well that it was He that chose me. If this opens the eyes of a few, then so be it. Let those who have eyes to see and ears to hear receive a message from their Shepherd and yield unto Him. Selah!
